Canned Foods Incorporated was a discount grocery chain that operated in the San Francisco Bay Area during the mid-twentieth century. Like many regional retailers of the period, it issued its own paper scrip to encourage repeat customer traffic — these small-denomination notes functioned as store credit rather than legal tender, redeemable only against future purchases at the issuing store.
The 5 cent denomination puts this firmly in the category of change scrip, likely issued to avoid the friction of making exact change during high-volume transactions. Grocery scrip of this type was never legal tender and had no value outside the issuing chain.
