Hauyne — spelled haüyne, after the French mineralogist René Just Haüy — is a rare tectosilicate found almost exclusively in phonolitic volcanic rocks, with gem-quality material sourced primarily from the Eifel region of Germany. Its intense blue coloration made it a logical material choice for a coin depicting a creature associated with fire and supernatural blue flame. Ghana's mint program has issued several fantastical creature coins under collector-market pressure, this being among the more mineralogically interesting for the specificity of the stone selected rather than the more commercially common sapphire or spinel.
