Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, diademed and draped, after the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait. The bust is set at centre against a radiating sunburst field. The surrounding legend reads ELIZABETH II to the upper left, 5 CEDIS to the upper right, and REPUBLIC OF GHANA along the lower arc, flanked by decorative dots. The Arms of Ghana appear at the base of the legend, and the coin is bordered by a beaded rim.

Reverse description A highly detailed engraving of a curled Arctic fox fills the entire field, rendered with fine fur texture in contrasting black and white tones with selective blackening. The fox is depicted in a resting pose with its bushy tail wrapped around its body, its face turned forward toward the viewer. Two round-cut blue gemstone inserts serve as the animal's eyes, providing vivid color contrast against the monochromatic design. No legends or inscriptions appear on the reverse. The design is framed by a plain raised rim.

Additional information

Ghana's collector coin program has issued numerous wildlife-themed pieces with gemstone inserts, nearly all of them featuring animals with no ecological connection to Ghana whatsoever. The arctic fox is native to circumpolar tundra regions — about as far from West Africa as a species can get. These issues are produced for the European collector market, not for domestic circulation, and the Bank of Ghana's imprimatur is largely a licensing arrangement.

The Elizabeth II obverse dates this piece to before the September 2022 proclamation of Charles III, making it among the final years of her effigy appearing on such issues.
