Additional information

Ghana's bullion coinage program has drawn collectors less for monetary reasons than for its wildlife subjects, which rotate annually and command premiums well above spot. The African grey parrot — native to the equatorial forests of West and Central Africa, including Ghana's own Atewa Range — was already under severe poaching pressure in 2016, the same year the CITES trade ban on wild-caught specimens took full effect. The timing was not incidental; Ghana had been a significant export country for the species prior to the ban.
