Ghana's African Leopard series sits in a crowded field of bullion wildlife programs, but the Bank of Ghana has issued silver coinage since the country's independence from Britain in 1957 — one of the first sub-Saharan nations to do so. The 5 Cedis denomination is nominal; the coin circulates as a bullion instrument, not pocket change, in a country where the cedi itself has undergone two redenominations since 1965 to strip accumulated zeros from rampant inflation.
