The Zhizheng Tongbao series was issued under Emperor Toghon Temür, the last Yuan emperor, during a period of catastrophic dynastic collapse. The Red Turban Rebellions had fractured central authority across much of China by the early 1350s, and regional mints operated with decreasing coordination. This 5-cash piece belongs to a denominational experiment — the Yuan court issued this series in multiple cash values simultaneously, an attempt to manage currency demand as paper money, the jiaochao, suffered runaway devaluation and public rejection.
Hartill 19.111 is among the heavier multiples in the series. The dynasty fell to Zhu Yuanzhang in 1368.
