A single Chinese character 當 (dang, meaning 'equal to' or 'valued at') appears above the hole, and the numeral 五 (wu, five) appears below, together indicating a denomination of five cash. The overall layout follows the standard Qing dynasty reverse format for multiple-cash issues of the Xianfeng reign.
