To the right and left of the hole, Chinese characters read 當五 (Dang Wu, meaning 'Value 5'), with the denomination notation 二錢五分 (Er Qian Wu Fen, '2 Qian 5 Fen') also present. Above and below the hole, Manchu script characters read 'Boo-fu', identifying the Fuzhou Mint. The characters are in bold raised relief against a flat field, with a plain raised outer rim typical of Qing-era cast coinage. |
