Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional reading order: top, bottom, right, left. The inscription reads 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao), identifying the reign period of the Xianfeng Emperor and denoting this as a 'heavy currency' denomination. The characters are boldly cast within a plain inner rim and an outer raised rim, set against a flat, unadorned field typical of Qing dynasty cast coinage.
