Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around the square perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 太平聖寶 (Tai Ping Sheng Bao, meaning 'Taiping Sacred Currency'). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat field, with a plain raised rim encircling the coin. The style reflects the robust, somewhat unrefined casting characteristic of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom issues. |
