| 正面描述 | Cast brass cash coin with a square central perforation. Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the traditional reading order: top, bottom, right, left around the central square hole, reading 嘉靖通寶 (Jiajing Tongbao). The characters are rendered in bold, well-defined relief against a flat field, with clear inner and outer rims framing the inscription. |

The Jiajing Tongbao five-cash pieces were authorized in 1544 as part of a broader attempt to rationalize Ming coinage following decades of monetary disorder, but the effort was undermined almost immediately by rampant private casting. Both the Board of Revenue and Board of Works operated separate Beijing mints producing this type, which accounts for the subtle but catalogued die distinctions between issues — Hartill differentiates them by calligraphic style in the reign title characters. Provincial counterfeits circulated so freely alongside official strikes that the government suspended large-denomination cash production entirely within a few years.
