The Dazhong Tongbao was issued by Zhu Yuanzhang before he formally proclaimed the Ming dynasty in 1368 — struck while he still governed under the provisional "Great Zhong" designation he adopted in 1361. The "Zhe" on this piece denotes Zhejiang, one of several regional mints producing the series. Zhu would go on to become the Hongwu Emperor, making this coinage a product of a rebel administration that won.
The five-cash denominations are considerably scarcer than the single-cash issues. Hartill notes meaningful variation across mint attributions within this series, and the Zhejiang pieces are among the better-documented.
