Obverse description Cast bronze cash coin featuring the four-character reign inscription 'Da Zhong Tong Bao' (大中通寶) arranged in regular script (kaishu) in a cruciform reading pattern around the central square hole: 'Da' (大) at top, 'Tong' (通) at right, 'Bao' (寶) at left, and 'Zhong' (中) at bottom. The boldly rendered characters occupy the four quadrants of the coin field, each positioned close to the square perforation. The rim is broad, plain, and slightly raised, framing the design with a well-defined border. The casting is robust, consistent with the large-module five-cash denomination issued during Zhu Yuanzhang's Da Zhong period prior to his founding of the Ming dynasty.
