Additional information

The Great Zhong State was the short-lived regime of Chen Youliang, a former fisherman's son who became the most dangerous rival Zhu Yuanzhang faced before the founding of the Ming dynasty. Chen declared himself emperor in 1360 and controlled much of the middle Yangtze valley, including the critical stronghold of Wuchang. His Dazhong coinage was struck during active civil war against Zhu's forces, and the regime collapsed entirely after Chen was killed by an arrow at the Battle of Lake Poyang in 1363 — one of the largest naval engagements in history. Coins continued in his son's name until 1368.
