Additional information

The Chongzhen Emperor's reign ended in April 1644 when Li Zicheng's rebel forces entered Beijing and the emperor hanged himself on Coal Hill behind the Forbidden City — making this among the last issues of the Ming dynasty. The Jian mint, operating in Fujian province, continued striking through the dynasty's final convulsions, producing multiple denominations as the court desperately sought revenue to fund a failing military resistance.

Fujian would subsequently become a holdout of Ming loyalist resistance under the Zheng family, giving coins from this mint an unusual historical position at the intersection of the dynasty's collapse and its prolonged southern afterlife.
