| 表面の説明 | Central square hole (cash-coin type) surrounded by four large Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a broad raised rim. The four-character reign title inscription reads clockwise from top: 崇 (Chong), 禎 (Zhen), 寶 (Bao), 通 (Tong), forming the legend 崇禎通寶 (Chongzhen Tongbao). Characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) with bold, well-defined strokes typical of late Ming cast coinage. The flat inner field between the characters shows a slightly textured surface consistent with sand-casting technique. |

The Chongzhen Emperor's reign ended in April 1644 when Li Zicheng's rebel forces entered Beijing and the emperor hanged himself on Coal Hill behind the Forbidden City — making this among the final issues of the Ming dynasty. The "Gong" mint mark denotes production at the Gongchang prefectural mint in Gansu, one of several provincial facilities pressed into service as the dynasty's finances collapsed and demand for emergency coinage outpaced the capacity of the central Beijing mints.
Brass five-cash pieces from this terminal Ming period show considerable alloy inconsistency across the series, a direct consequence of disrupted metal supply routes during the civil war.
