The Madras Presidency's cash coinage occupied an awkward administrative position in the early nineteenth century — the Company was simultaneously trying to rationalize a chaotic inherited currency system while keeping enough familiar denominations in circulation to avoid alienating local traders. The 1807 issue sits in the middle of that transition, predating the more aggressive standardization push that followed the 1808 Madras currency reforms.
