Obverse description At center, the heraldic shield of the East India Company is displayed, featuring the Union cross quartered with ten diagonal stripes and surmounted by a lion passant. The shield is encircled by a continuous Latin legend reading EAST INDIA COMPANY, with the abbreviated inscription AUSP : REGIS & SENAT : ANG and the date 1803 below, translating to 'By the authority of the King and Parliament of England.' The entire design is contained within a raised toothed border. The engraving is rendered in a crisp, mechanical style consistent with Soho Mint production.
