The Caribbean guilder was introduced in 2025 as the joint currency of Curaçao and Sint Maarten following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, replacing the Netherlands Antillean guilder after a transitional period that stretched far longer than originally planned. The issuing authority, the Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten, had been preparing the changeover for years while both islands continued circulating the old Antillean guilder on inertia alone.
The trimetallic construction — three concentric steel rings — is unusual for a denomination of this face value and reflects cost-control decisions typical of small island monetary authorities with limited mintage volumes.
