The buzuk is one of France's local complementary currencies (monnaies locales complémentaires), a network that expanded considerably after the 2008 financial crisis as municipalities sought tools to keep spending within defined geographic areas. The Pays de Morlaix version launched in 2016, accepted at participating businesses in the Morlaix region of Finistère in western Brittany. These currencies are not legal tender and carry no exchange function outside their issuing territory — holders must convert back to euros through participating credit unions before the notes expire.
Print runs are small and controlled, expiry dating is built into the system, and most notes return through redemption rather than wear.
