| 表面の説明 | Left-facing bust of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, first President of the Republic of The Gambia, depicted wearing traditional attire and a kufi cap, with eyeglasses. The circumferential legend reads 'REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA' along the upper arc, with the date '1971' along the lower right, all in Latin script. The portrait, engraved by Michael Rizzello, fills the majority of the field in a bold, realistic style. |

The Gambia's first decimal coinage series, issued in 1971, accompanied the country's switch from the pound system to the dalasi and butut — a decimalization that took effect on July 1 of that year, less than a decade after independence from Britain in 1965. The series was produced at the Royal Mint, a contractual holdover common among newly independent West African states still reliant on British minting infrastructure well into the 1970s.
