The Banco Nacional de Bolivia was established in 1871 with a concession granted by the Bolivian government, and by the early 1880s it was the dominant commercial bank operating in the country. The American Bank Note Company handled the printing for most of the bank's note series during this period — a common arrangement for Latin American institutions that lacked domestic printing infrastructure capable of producing secure currency.
Bolivia's 1879–1884 War of the Pacific with Chile and Peru severely disrupted the country's financial systems and trade routes, particularly through the loss of its Pacific coastal territories. Notes from this 1883 issue were circulating against that backdrop of territorial defeat and economic dislocation.
S216 falls within the Shafer-Pick South American classification, indicating a private commercial bank issue rather than a state emission.
