The Tesorería de la República de Bolivia — the national treasury itself, not a commercial bank — issued this note directly, reflecting Bolivia's then-underdeveloped central banking infrastructure. A proper central bank, the Banco Central de Bolivia, would not be established until 1928. In the intervening decades, treasury notes like this one filled the gap, backed by government authority rather than bank reserves.
ABNC printed for Bolivia across several series during this period, and the quality of their intaglio work held up well in Andean circulation conditions — though high-altitude humidity and heavily handled frontier commerce took their toll on surviving examples.
