Diu, a fortified island settlement on the Gujarat coast, remained under Portuguese administration centuries after Mughal pressure had stripped away most of their continental Indian holdings. By the reign of José I, the mint there was producing copper fractions for intensely local use — coins that rarely traveled beyond the immediate trading economy of the port. The 5 bazaruco denomination itself reflects the persistence of a pre-colonial accounting system the Portuguese absorbed rather than replaced.
