Obverse description The quartered cantonal arms of Aargau occupy the centre of the field, the shield displaying in the upper-left and lower-right quarters horizontal wavy lines representing the river Aar, and in the upper-right and lower-left quarters a crosshatched ground charged with a five-pointed star, evoking the three stars of the canton. The shield is flanked by symmetrical olive or laurel branches tied at the base, their sprays curving upward on either side. The circular legend CANTON AARGAU arcs across the upper field, the date 1826 descends along the right, and the denomination 5·BATZ· appears in the lower field below the branches. The entire design is contained within a beaded border.
