Obverse description Central device depicts the Basel crozier (the heraldic bishop's staff, symbol of the canton) set within an oval cartouche, flanked on either side by oak branches tied at the base. The legend CANTON BASEL arcs around the upper field, reading left and right of the central motif, while the denomination 5.BATZᴺ. is inscribed in large lettering across the lower field. The design is framed by a continuous milled border. The overall composition is bold and heraldic in the Neoclassical style characteristic of early nineteenth-century Swiss cantonal coinage.
