Nidwalden's independent coinage history is brief and politically fraught. The half-canton had been absorbed into the Helvetic Republic in 1798 and saw its monetary autonomy stripped entirely during that period. The 1811 issue came under the Mediation Act framework, when Napoleon's 1803 reorganization restored limited cantonal sovereignty — though Swiss coinage remained a patchwork of competing local issues until federal consolidation in 1850.
The HMZ reference places this among the rarest of Nidwalden's documented emissions, with surviving examples extremely limited by any measure of small-canton output.
