| Beschrijving voorzijde | The state coat of arms of the Romanian People's Republic occupies the central field, depicting a mountainous landscape with forests and a rising sun in the background, framed by a wreath of wheat ears bound at the base. A derrick appears in the left portion of the shield, symbolizing industry. A five-pointed star surmounts the composition, and a ribbon at the base of the wreath bears the legend 'RPR' in raised Latin characters. |

Romania's 1952 monetary reform wiped out savings overnight, replacing the old leu at punishing exchange rates that varied by account size — a deliberate mechanism for eliminating accumulated private wealth. The 5 Bani issued in its aftermath circulated under a command economy where coin production targets answered to the plan, not to demand. The National Bank existed in name only as an independent institution; by 1953 it functioned as a direct instrument of the Romanian Workers' Party.
The KM#83.2 designation distinguishes this from the .1 variety by a detail in the reverse lettering spacing.
