Aanvullende informatie

Issued in the final months of Pius VI's temporal rule, this piece belongs to the emergency coinage struck at Civitavecchia after French forces under Berthier entered Rome in February 1798 and proclaimed the Roman Republic. The Pope himself was taken prisoner and transported to France, where he died in Valence in August 1799. The Civitavecchia mint continued striking in his name throughout this period — a peculiar administrative defiance, issuing coins for a sovereign held captive on foreign soil.

The "crude" designation is not a grade judgment but a recognized type classification. Dies were cut hastily and planchet preparation was inconsistent, reflecting the disrupted supply chains of an occupied city.
