Thailand's Series 4 notes were introduced following the country's official name change from Siam in 1939 — the "Thai" designation in the type description reflects that transition directly, distinguishing these impressions from the otherwise near-identical Siamese predecessors on the same Thomas De La Rue plates. The young Rama VIII, Ananda Mahidol, was king at the time of issue but was studying in Switzerland and never ruled in any practical sense; he died under disputed circumstances in 1946 before returning permanently to the throne.
De La Rue produced two distinct face-plate versions for this denomination within Series 4, differentiated primarily by minor typography — the "Type II" classification separates this from the earlier impression run.
