Issued to mark the 80th birthday of Princess Srinagarindra — mother of Bhumibol Adulyadej and known throughout Thailand as the "Princess Mother" — this coin was authorized as part of a broader royal commemorative program the Thai government maintained for significant dynastic milestones. Srinagarindra was born a commoner, the daughter of a physician, making her ascent into the royal family through marriage to Prince Mahidol of Songkhla genuinely unusual by the standards of early 20th-century Siamese court society.
She outlived the issuance by nearly two decades, dying in 1995 at 94.
