Issued to mark the fiftieth birthday of Bhumibol Adulyadej, this commemorative was struck while Thailand was under military governance following the October 1976 coup — one of the most violent political ruptures in modern Thai history. The timing meant that a coin celebrating royal continuity was produced under a government that had seized power less than a year earlier, with Bhumibol's symbolic stature effectively lending legitimacy to an otherwise contested administration.
