Argentina's 1985 Austral Plan — announced by Raúl Alfonsín's government on June 14th of that year — replaced the Peso Argentino at a rate of 1 Austral to 1,000 Pesos Argentinos, a direct response to inflation that had exceeded 1,000% annually. Rather than wait for entirely new stock to be printed, the Casa de Moneda simply overprinted existing 5,000 Peso Argentino notes with the new denomination, producing this hybrid.
The overprint conversion was a stopgap, and the Austral itself proved no more durable — by 1989 hyperinflation had returned with force, eventually destroying that currency too.
