Argentina's provinces have occasionally issued their own emergency currency during federal fiscal crises, and Salta was among those that did so in the mid-1980s as hyperinflation gutted the purchasing power of national banknotes faster than Buenos Aires could print them. The austral itself had only been introduced nationally in June 1985, replacing the peso argentino at 1,000 to one — a denomination structure that was already collapsing before provincial supplements like this one entered circulation.
Casa de Moneda printed this for the province under formal authorization, giving it a degree of official legitimacy that many other Argentine provincial quasi-currencies of the period lacked.
