| Obverse description | The obverse field is entirely occupied by a dense, interlaced Thuluth calligraphic composition arranged in a multi-lobed medallion format, characteristic of early Safavid gold coinage. The central field bears the Shahada and the Shia profession of faith — affirming the oneness of God, the prophethood of Muhammad, and the wilayat of Ali — rendered in highly stylised, interlocking Arabic script. Surrounding the central medallion, the field contains the names of the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shia Islam, disposed in a circular arrangement within a beaded or plain inner border. The overall design reflects the Safavid state's explicit declaration of Twelver Shia Islam as the official religion, a defining propagandistic feature of Ismail I's coinage. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of hammered technique, with some areas of weakness at the periphery. |
