Tannu Tuva existed as a nominally independent republic from 1921 under heavy Soviet supervision, and its paper currency was essentially a Soviet project. The 1935 series, of which this 5 Akşa is part, was printed in the USSR — the Tuvan state lacked any domestic printing infrastructure. The notes circulated in a territory of roughly 60,000 people engaged almost entirely in pastoral nomadism, which makes any surviving example with genuine wear unusually scarce; the monetary economy was thin, and barter remained dominant.
Tannu Tuva was formally annexed by the Soviet Union in 1944, after which Tuvan currency became immediately worthless and most was destroyed or discarded.
