KM#25b is the aluminium iteration of a denomination that Israel had already struck in copper-clad steel. The switch was purely economic — rising metal costs made the heavier alloy impractical for a low-value coin — and the dramatic weight reduction is immediately apparent when handling the piece. Aluminium coinage of this period was controversial in several issuing countries due to poor public acceptance and vending machine incompatibility, problems Israel navigated by phasing the denomination out entirely by the early 1980s.
