| Beschrijving voorzijde | Printed in green on cream paper, the obverse carries the Afghan state emblem within an ornate circular guilloche at left, with a vignette of a minaret or column monument set within an oval frame at right. The numeral '5' appears at upper left and right, with the denomination 'Afghanis' in Latin script below the left numeral, and multi-line Dari text forming the main body of the note. Two manuscript signatures appear at lower centre, and the serial number is printed in red at upper left and lower right. |

Afghanistan's Ministry of Finance issued this note directly rather than through a central bank — Da Afghanistan Bank wouldn't be established until 1939. The 1936 series, of which this is part, was printed by Orell Füssli in Zurich, a firm with deep roots in Swiss security printing going back to the sixteenth century and responsible for a significant share of Afghan paper currency production during this period.
The low denomination suggests heavy everyday use, and survivors in anything above circulated grades are genuinely uncommon.
