| Descripción del anverso | The obverse is printed in rose-red and olive tones, centred by an oval vignette of a Javanese bull (banteng) standing in a rice-field landscape, set within an ornate guilloche border. To the right of the vignette is a large blank watermark window encircled by fine lathe-work underprint, while the upper centre carries the issuer title BANK INDONESIA in bold letterpress. The denomination LIMA RIBU RUPIAH appears in two lines to the right of the bull vignette, with numeral 5000 repeated in the lower corners; two facsimile signature lines for Gubernur and Direktur are printed at the foot, and a diagonal red SPECIMEN overprint crosses the face. |

| Descripción del reverso | The reverse is engraved in blue-green tones and centres on a detailed intaglio harbour scene with a large cargo vessel moored at a busy Indonesian port, industrial warehouses and a jetty visible in the background. Ornate scroll-work frames occupy the corners, and the denomination 5000 appears in numeral form at lower left and lower right. The serial-number fields carry the zeroed specimen placeholders 5000A 0000 at upper left and right, a diagonal red SPECIMEN overprint is applied across the face, and a legal warning inscription runs along the lower margin in Bahasa Indonesia. |

Bank Indonesia's early years were marked by competing political pressures over which notes would represent the new republic, and this 1957 issue arrived during a period of acute regional tension — the outer island rebellions of 1957–58 were already forming, and Jakarta was scrambling to assert fiscal and political authority across the archipelago. Thomas De La Rue's involvement here reflects Indonesia's continued reliance on British printing expertise well into the post-independence decade, a practical concession given the absence of domestic high-security printing capability.
The P#54A designation distinguishes this from the closely related P#54B, which carries a different signature combination — a detail that catches out many collectors.
