5.000 Pesos Oro

By 1990, Colombia's Banco de la República had been printing its own notes domestically for over a decade, having brought production fully in-house at the Bogotá facility in the late 1970s. The 5,000 Pesos Oro denomination was the highest-value note in regular circulation at that point, though rampant inflation through the late 1980s had badly eroded its purchasing power — a 5,000-peso note that bought meaningful goods in 1986 covered considerably less by the time this series was issued.

The security thread on this series is a simple embedded metallic strip, predating the more sophisticated windowed threads the Banco introduced in subsequent issues.
