Colombia's Banco de la República turned to Rome's Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato for this series, a printing relationship that reflected both the quality demands of high-denomination notes and the limited domestic capacity for intaglio work at the time. IPZS was then — and remains — primarily the Italian state's official document and currency printer, making it an unusual but entirely credible choice for a Latin American central bank navigating the inflationary pressures of the mid-1980s.
The 5,000 Pesos Oro denomination was introduced as Colombian inflation steadily eroded the purchasing power of lower notes — by 1987, the 1,000 Peso note that had seemed substantial a decade earlier was losing practical utility for everyday transactions.
