Obverse description Portrait of Rafael Núñez at left center, rendered in intaglio in purple-mauve tones, with a vignette of a colonial church at lower left. The central field bears the denomination inscription CINCO MIL PESOS ORO in large letterpress text, flanked by the numeral 5000 at lower left and right. The issuer title EL BANCO DE LA REPÚBLICA arches across the top, with PAGARÁ AL PORTADOR and COLOMBIA inscribed below, along with the date BOGOTÁ, 5 DE AGOSTO DE 1987 and two facsimile signatures for Gerente and Abogado Subgerente.

Reverse description A seated full-figure portrait of M. A. Caro occupies the right-center field, executed in intaglio in purple-mauve tones against a fine guilloche underprint. To the left, a circular vignette contains the Colombian national coat of arms, surrounded by an ornate lathe-work border. An inscription panel at upper center lists the nine original states of the Estados Unidos de Colombia (1863–1886) — Antioquia, Bolívar, Boyacá, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Panamá, Santander, and Tolima — with the denomination CINCO MIL PESOS ORO lettered in large type along the lower margin.
