By 1984, Bolivia was in the opening stages of one of the worst hyperinflationary episodes of the twentieth century. Inflation would peak above 20,000 percent annually by 1985, making this 5,000 Pesos Bolivianos note — substantial on the day it was printed — essentially worthless within months of issue. The denomination was not recklessness; it was a response to a collapse already in progress.
The American Bank Note Company had a long relationship with Bolivian currency production stretching back decades. The P#167A is among the higher denominations of the Pesos Bolivianos series before Bolivia abandoned the currency entirely, replacing it with the Boliviano in 1987 at a rate of one million to one.
