Colombia's late 1990s were defined by one of the worst economic contractions in the country's modern history — the 1999 recession shrank GDP by around 4.5%, the deepest single-year decline since the 1930s. The 5,000 Peso denomination was a workhorse note through this period, circulating heavily as the peso came under severe pressure and the government moved toward the adoption of a full inflation-targeting framework.
The signature change for 1999 dates — Héctor Fabio Suárez Burgos replacing Sergio Clavijo Vergara as the second signatory — coincides almost exactly with that crisis year, making date identification on this pick more than a bureaucratic detail.
