5.000 Colones

The 5,000 Colón denomination was introduced as Costa Rica's highest-value note at a time when cumulative inflation through the late 1980s and early 1990s had rendered lower denominations increasingly inadequate for daily commercial transactions. De La Rue's involvement with the Banco Central series was long-standing by this point, and the execution here reflects their standard high-volume intaglio and offset combination work of the period — competent, consistent, unremarkable by their own standards.

The security thread on this series runs vertically and is visible as a continuous embedded strip under transmitted light, not the later windowed type introduced in subsequent Costa Rican issues.
