The Sächsisches Steinkohlen-Syndikat — the Saxon hard coal syndicate based in Zwickau — was among the many industrial firms that issued emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when Reichsbank notes lost value faster than they could be printed and distributed. Coal syndicates occupied an unusual position: they controlled a commodity of genuine intrinsic value, which gave their notgeld a degree of local credibility that pure municipal issues often lacked.
F. Ullmann's Zwickau print shop handled the job locally, keeping turnaround fast. The guilloche work is the only concession to anti-counterfeiting — adequate for a note whose face value would be worthless within weeks regardless.
