By the time this note entered circulation in mid-1923, Germany's hyperinflationary spiral had already consumed denominations that would have seemed absurd just two years earlier. The Reichsbank was printing around the clock, and the five-million mark note — a sum that would have represented a comfortable fortune in 1920 — was within weeks reduced to bus-fare purchasing power. The sheer print run of over twelve million reflects the frantic pace of production rather than any considered monetary policy.
Watermarking remained the sole security feature, a thin nod to anti-counterfeiting at a moment when the notes themselves were becoming economically worthless faster than forgers could profit from them.
