The left margin carries an ornate vertical cartouche with interlaced guilloche scrollwork alongside a red vertical serial number; the issuer title in Gothic blackletter heads the right field, below which the denomination FÜNF MILLIONEN MARK appears in large bold letterpress type. The Reichsbahndirektion Frankfurt am Main was one of several regional German railway directorates that issued emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the central government's printing operations could not keep pace with demand and private employers needed denominations large enough to pay wages. Railway directorates had both the institutional credibility and the practical necessity to issue their own paper; workers needed to be paid, and the notes were typically redeemable against fares or wages within the issuing region.
By the time a 5,000,000 Mark denomination made sense, the Rentenmark stabilization was only months away.
