One of the thousands of Notgeld issues that flooded the Rhineland in 1923 as hyperinflation outpaced the Reichsbank's ability to supply functional currency. Industrial firms like this heavy machinery and railcar manufacturer were legally permitted — effectively forced — to print their own emergency notes to pay workers, since wages settled even one day late lost meaningful purchasing power. The 5,000,000 Mark denomination, staggering by any prewar standard, was already approaching obsolescence within weeks of printing.
