Mecklenburg-Schwerin was one of dozens of German regional and municipal authorities that issued emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank could not print fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By mid-1923, five million marks was roughly bus fare. Regional issuers like the Staatsministerium stepped in out of practical necessity, not monetary ambition.

Locally printed in Schwerin, this note bypassed the major security printers entirely. That origin is worth noting — quality control and paper stock varied considerably among provincial issues, and Mecklenburg examples are not immune to ink strike problems and uneven cutting.
